Any ideas out there for a niche in dental that will grow in 2009? Implants, sundries, technology, equipment, whatever? Maybe the question should be, "Will there be growth in any segment of the dental industry for 2009?"

I think economic conditions in 2009 are going to make '08 look like a regular walk in the park. I know I'm going to get blasted as "chicken little" and "doom and gloom naysayer" because I've been walking in those shoes for a few years now. Ever since my wife and I sold our house (2005) and began renting (which we are still doing) and started trying to spread the debt bubble word we've been ostracized as partypoopers. Then again at the end of August this year when we parked 90% of our investments in cash. So please, feel free to hammer away here, I'm used to it :D

In any case, my bet is that Doctors will be tightening belts and avoiding ANY expenditures that aren't necessary to carry out day-to-day business. With many more home foreclosures in the works for areas such as CA, FL, AZ and NV (among others) and absolutely DISMAL unemployment figures to come in the new year we will see dentists battening down the hatches in an attempt to just keep afloat. "Will there be growth in any segment of the dental industry for 2009?" Again, I hope I'm wrong but I am guessing no.

On the other side of the same coin, I believe that we are all witnessing the greatest transfer of wealth that will occur in any of our lifetimes; individuals that are aware, alert and informed stand a good chance of profiting handsomely despite any pain in overall segments. In times of duress (imagined or real) sales professionals that give freely of their business acumen and provide essential services with added value to their clients can build much trust. I'd wager that most of the DSPers will step up their games, meet any economic crisis head-on and come through with stronger relationships for it.

I sold a Cerec last week. The client believes keeping the lab bill in the practice will help with a slow down if it occurs in his practice. he moved forward in preparation rather than not buying due to fear.

Judging  by the show attendance and media attention … Schein  and  Waterlase had  the most impressive booths and traffic  and may be  the places to look for growth in 2009.

I guess this was the Greater NY meeting?

I was at that meeting and it sucked. It was half of what it had been in any previous year. 2009 is going to be a disaster beyond measure. It's time to look for another career.
