CAD/CAM in dentistry is about to explode. There are dozens of scanners and Milling machines on or about to come to the market. Who will be the leader or fore runner no one knows. Shein may have something worthwhile hitting the market. Nobel Biocare has the Procera system which uses a much different model. The scanner is relatively cheap, $15K., then production is done by a centralized production facility in NJ with a 2-3 day turn around. Lava, by 3M is strong, but expensive, about $250,000.
Dentists and labs are very conservative, so for them to grasp the idea of all ceramic restorations replacing PFM's is a huge and time consuming task.
I work in this field and adoption of new technology by dentists is very slow. My feeling is that in the next 5-10 years this technology will replace the current high noble metal restorations that have been the standard for the last 50 years.
